本词表专为大学英语四、六级考试所制定。词目的选择遵循"以定量分析为主，定性分析为辅"的原则，参考了《大学英语教学大纲》(《大学英语教学大纲》修订工作组，，2007)所附词表；还参照了Collins Cobuild，BYU Corpus of American English等词典及词库的词频统计，以及Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English，Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English 等常用的学习型词典列出的词汇。
随着社会的发展，近年来出现了大量新生词汇。因此，本词表还收录了少量出现频率较高的新词，如swipe，smartphone，podcast等。本词表还收录了1987年以来四、六级考试考核频率较高但未列入以前教学词表的词汇。
本词表共收录词目5418个。分四级和六级两个级别，其中六级词用★号标出(且已标为蓝色字)。本词表只列词形，不列词性，不给释义，不注读音。
词表中的同形异音异义词分列，如minute，resume，lead，invalid等；同形异义词一般也予以分列，如just，mine，bound，patient等。有两种拼法的词并列，如adviser/advisor；既有英式又有美式拼法的词原则上以美式拼法为主，如labo(u)r，skeptical/sceptical，judg(e)ment，connection/connexion，special(i)ty。
派生词原则上不单列(特别常用的除外)。如列了serious，则不另列seriously，seriousness。如果形式上是派生词，而实际上已不被看成派生词，则单独列出，如interesting，remarkable，really，advanced，proceedings等。
